Parents, we have officially started the fourth nine weeks, and with it we are beginning a new unit in ELA. We will begin a new novel study with the book "The Whipping Boy". We will be studying about the Middle Ages and Medieval Times as we prepare for this novel study. Students will NOT need their own copy of the book at home as we should be able to complete all reading in class. This will be a fun unit for us all, complete with a creative response project at the end. Look for more information on the project to come toward the end of April :). Happy reading! Mrs. Jordan

Happy New Year! The third nine weeks begins a new unit of study for ELA. We will be reading a mixture of fiction and non-fiction texts this nine weeks that explore events and ideas of the American Revolution. This is a great time to build on what students have already learned about American history in their Social Studies class, while deepening their understanding. This will not be a novel study, as with the last unit (The Lightning Thief), and we will not be reading an entire novel through. We will look more at excerpts from several texts on the same topic. All of the texts we will read will be kept in the classroom and there is no need to acquire a home copy. I am looking forward to delving into this new unit with everyone and I hope you are too! Happy reading! Mrs. Jordan

Dear Parents,
We will begin the second nine weeks with a novel study. The novel we will be reading and working with is The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. This book is full of action and adventure, and serves as a great introduction to the world of Greek Mythology. I am looking forward to this part of our curriculum, as I am sure your children will as well. The book is quite long, so we will not be able to read every word in class. We will begin chapters in class, but I will ask that they finish the chapters at home for homework. They should be able to fit this into their “20 minutes of reading”. I am asking that everyone get a copy of the book to keep at home for this purpose. You can buy the book, check it out at the local library, or even acquire a copy on the Nook or Kindle, since it is for home use only. This book is also worth 13 AR points, so it is well worth the investment!
Thank you for your support,
Mrs. Jordan

Hello parents! This week we will be busy completing multiple benchmark assessments in the classroom, including AIMSWEB and the new LEAP 360 assessments. Your child cannot and should not study for these tests. They are simply designed to assess the current achievement and skill level of your child, to direct future instruction. These tests will not affect their grade- they should simply do their best :)
Since we are doing so much benchmark testing this week, we will not begin reading out of the Guidebooks until next week. We will spend this week on “pre-reading” activities to get them ready to read next week. Their weekly test on Friday will only cover Spelling and Grammar.
Don't forget that this weekend is a long weekend, as we are out for Labor Day. School resumes Tuesday. Back to School night is also Tuesday, September 5th, 6-7p.m. See you there!

Welcome Fourth Graders! I am so happy to get to know you all! I teach Reading and Language Arts for the fourth grade at A. C. Steere. Make sure you check back here often for important announcements and updates. I hope you read some great books this summer and are ready to share about them :) We will get started with AR as soon as the system is up, so everybody get ready to meet your AR goals this year!
We will be doing a series of novel studies this year, covering four different novels in our class. I have a book for everyone to use while they are here at school, but it's always a good idea to purchase or check your own copy out at the library so you can read from home, too. Here is a list of the books we will be covering:
Hurricanes: Earth's Mightiest Storms, by Patricia Lauber
If You Lived at the Time of the American Revolution, by Kay Moore
The Whipping Boy, by Sid Fleishman
The Lightning Thief, by Rick Riordan
I hope to see everyone at school Sunday (2-4) for the Meet and Greet- make sure you bring your school supplies to drop off that afternoon :) It's going to be another amazing year! Reading Rocks! ~Mrs. J.
